I do agree that although "oriental" sounds very outdated to me, it still seems to be in use here (in Italy), and is not considered to be pejorative.Angelahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13774358229060424008noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27527447.post-15653422403961335212007-10-11T12:32:00.000+02:002007-10-11T12:32:00.000+02:00I can't believe someone is actually stupid enough ...I can't believe someone is actually stupid enough to write this!Lara 900https://www.blogger.com/profile/13809968280001262981noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27527447.post-83629556923416389532007-09-06T12:17:00.000+02:002007-09-06T12:17:00.000+02:00I would have said that the author must have Down a...I would have said that the author must have Down as well, but, then again, I don't want to insult anyone with Down. Use of this pejorative word is no longer appropriate when referring to people."<BR/><BR/>http://news.ncmonline.com/news/view_article.html?article_id=143<BR/><BR/>To be honest, I didn't know this either till a while ago. For me "orientals" was merely an oldfashioned generic term for people from the Middle East that nobody really used anymore. When I was in Spain, people called me oriental and in the beginning I just didn't get what they meant. With the explanation above it makes more sense now (I do not believe that they had the inention to insult, but I think that the idea of political correctness has not settled as deeply into the public mind as in other countries).projektleiterinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12114900774366320516noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27527447.post-51464718820949059752007-08-25T18:33:00.000+02:002007-08-25T18:33:00.000+02:00Hi. However, to reply to the previous poster, the term "oriental" is not considered offensive in the UK, EU, and Hong Kong (so I guess China too). Their use of language is still racist though.
